Harden

My name is Harden. I'm a national Ugandan gay man aged 21.

My life and love in a nutshell

This is my story. I knew I was gay when I was in school. After a certain level of education in Uganda, I found a job to survive on my own.

I was staying in a safe home in Uganda and started dating another gay guy who stayed at the same place. We pushed up for some time and decided to rent and stay together.

But homophobia killed it

In the process, the community started giving us negative attention and following whatever we did. We were in deep love, obviously noticed by other people, which we didn’t realise then.

It wasn’t long before the community and the police attacked our home for an arrest. Fortunately, we were out for the day and heard about it before we returned. Friends told us we were facing charges because of our sexual orientation.

I ended up seeking refuge in a UN refugee camp

That led me to flee from Uganda in 2021. I haven’t heard about my partner since.
